What is The Long Day Challenge?

The Long Day Challenge is a 36 hole golf tournament that takes place over a single day. Each team consists of 4 players who will compete in a scramble format across all 36 holes.

Where is The Long Day Challenge?

The Long Day Challenge takes place at Wasatch Mountain Golf Course in Midway, UT. Wasatch Mountain is the perfect setting for the tournament because it consists of two separate 18 hole championship style courses. Each team will play all 36 holes as part of the tournament.

When is The Long Day Challenge?

The Long Day Challenge takes place each year on the closest Saturday to the longest day of the year. In 2024, the tournament will be held on June 22nd.

On June 21st, there will be a mandatory check in (Welcome Gala) held in the evening from 6-9 PM. This is when all golfers must check-in if they would like to play the next day. As part of the gala, there will be food, activities, sponsors, and socialization amongst all the participating teams.

Golf begins early the next morning on June 22nd. Each team will be expected to arrive early enough to begin play as soon as light permits.

Handicapping Formula

All team members must have a GHIN handicap. The maximum handicap for each individual player is 24. The spread between the lowest and highest handicapped players cannot exceed 15. For example, if your team handicaps are 1, 5, 7, and 13, your team spread would be 12. This is because the difference between the lowest handicap (1), and the highest handicap (13), is 12, which fits within the handicap spread parameters. If your team handicaps are 1, 5, 7, and 17, your team spread would be 16. This is because the difference between the lowest handicap (1), and the highest handicap (17), is 16, which DOES NOT fit within the handicap spread parameters.

The handicap formula is calculated by dividing the total handicap of the team by four and multiplying the result by 35%. For example, if a team had handicaps of: Joe 4; Pete 10; Steve 11; Dave 18 - the team handicap would be 43. Dividing 43 by 4 equals 10.75. Multiplying 10.75 by 35% equals 3.76 for the team.

How do I get a handicap?
What rules do I need to know before I play?

Each foursome competes as a team for the BEST SINGLE NET SCORE for the entire 36-hole qualifier. The top 10 qualifying teams compete in a 9-hole derby challenge playoff.

1. Play begins with a shotgun start. Male golfers use the blue tees and female golfers use the red tees. Each member of the foursome tees off.

2. The group decides which is the most desirable drive. The other three players then pick up their balls and proceed to the location of the best drive where they each play the second shot.

3. There is no drive requirement. The order in which foursome players hit can be varied according to the strategy the team wishes to employ.

4. On the fairways, place all balls within one club length (no closer to the hole) of the best ball selected for play. The best of the four second shots is selected and becomes the starting point for the third shots of all players. This procedure continues until the ball is holed out.

5. On the putting green, each member of the foursome must putt before anyone hits their second putt. If a putt is made, the remaining players do not putt.

6. At the end of each hole the score for the foursome is recorded on the scorecard.

7. In sand traps, each ball must be played from where the original ball landed. Rake the trap after each shot.

8. Foursome captains will turn in their scorecards upon completion of the round.
